Training Tip of the Week: Hard-to-catch horse tip: Halter the easiest to catch horse first.

If you keep your horse in a herd situation you’ve probably experienced the frustration of trying to halter a horse and having the entire herd run away from you with their tails lifted in the air. Be smart about which horse you try to catch first. Don’t go after Mr. Elusive straightaway and then be surprised when all the horses run away from you. Instead, start with the old gelding that’s begging to be let in. As you start weaning down the herd, you’ll notice that the horses get more willing to be caught. No one wants to be the last horse in the pasture because the last horse in the pasture is easy pickings for predators. Over time, the horses that are easy to catch will almost train the other horses to be caught easily too.
